The Ledge #434: New Releases

This is another of those new release episodes that featured some last minute additions. Thanks to another Bandcamp day where 100% of all proceeds go to the artists, a number of artists surprised fans with new music. There was a new Cloud Nothings album. A return by The Baseball Project. A great new sampler to help save the rewnowned Cat’s Cradle club in North Carolina.

All of these great surprises just made what was already a fabulous collection of new music even that much better. This month sees the return of The Jayhawks, some great new bands such as Country Westerns, and a lengthy set of the usual awesomeness that routinely comes from Rum Bar Records!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

Always keen on opening up new horizons for the TJ audience, TJR found an awesome new MVP patch in Australia, dug a little deeper only to come up with some interesting facts about Australia´s history and own racial issues. In the light of BLM, certainly worth a listen. Plus, we got the chance to talk to Electric Six´s Dave for an exclusive TJR interview – powered by TJ Moscow.

The Ledge #433: Best Albums of 2020 (So Far)

The world may be ending but great music lives forever. Despite everything that has gone on this year there has still been a steady stream of fabulous albums released. Tonight’s show is a look at the 40 best albums released in the first half of 2020. Well, that was the intention but it was discovered that one record included tonight was actually first put out in 2008. So it’s the 39 best albums of the year, along with one of the best reissues. It’s a great mix of artists still in their teens up to that grand old man named Bob Dylan. There’s punk, Americana, power pop, postpunk, and garage rock. It’s Scott music for Scott people!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

The Ledge #432: Covers

Once a year or so, I like to put together a show of nothing but covers. Partly due to COVID-19 this year has already seen more of these sorts of tracks than ever before. Bands have put out full albums or EP’s of covers; labels have upped the ante in tribute records. As always, there’s also the well-placed rave-up of classic tunes on regular albums and singles.

Tonight collects the cream of these sorts of releases, with all but two tracks coming from 2020 releases. (I couldn’t resist including the old Redd Kross cover of the Stones’ “Citadel” after buying the vinyl this week.) There are surprise covers albums by The Dollyrots, D.I., and Built To Spill (a great tribute to the late Daniel Johnston). Add to that some great tribute releases, including a fabulous tribute to Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl”, and you have an extremely fun couple of hours.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

The Ledge #431: New Releases, Pt. 2

As I said last week, there have been so many great releases in the last few weeks that this month’s new release episode was forced to expand to two episodes. Quality-wise, there’s no difference between the two episodes. In fact, it could be argued that this episode is more varoius than last week’s as it flows in and out of punk, post-punk, power pop, jangle-pop, experimental pop, psych, and even a nod to folk thanks to some of the last recordings by legendary rockers The Pretty Things.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

TJR Episode 68: Black Lives Matter – a view within and from the Turbojugend

itunes pic
Even tough TJ is not a political organization per se, ignoring the current situation in the streets of the USA feels inappropriate to TJ Radio. Especially in the light of our TJ manifesto, that definitely states that we do not tolerate fascist or racist behavior within our group. We decided to take the mic and talk to Black Rage from TJ New London to ask him about his views, based on his personal experiences and knowledge. There are some rather questionable facts about the executive mode operandi revealed ass well ass some more than practical advice given – especially for TJ members who are politically active or are thinking about it.

Jake’s Inferno Episode 418

Summer’s just around the corner in this part of the world and so is my vacation. Due to a certain pandemic I’m not doing much, but as Bon Scott sang “Doing nothing means a lot to me”. No AC/DC on this month’s show, it’s still pretty action packed though with punk, grunge, alternative, hip hop, thrash, metal and country.

The Ledge #430: New Releases (Pt. 1)

I didn’t expect this month’s new release show to be a two part extravaganza. But as I was throwing songs into the play folder for this week’s show I suddenly realized I had way too many tracks for one show. So once again, next week I’ll be playing another two hours of brand new music.

Of course, it really helped strengthen the folder with the surprise releases from a couple of old favorites. First we saw Bob Mould preview his upcoming 14th solo album with the release of the blistering “American Crisis”, and just 24 hours later Elvis Costello suddenly dropped a new song called “No Flag”. And if that’s not enough for surprise drops, Ledge favorite Pavid Vermin suddenly had a new record of covers from Lookout Records releases!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

DftUnderground Episode 397

Quarantine Coverage Episode #4: Community

We are airing an episode this week that was recorded prior to the incredible rebellion that has erupted in the US following the racist and outrageous murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police. We could not be more proud of the courageous protesters in the streets demanding justice for George Floyd and making is clear that Black Lives Matter. We are very eager to talk about those issues more on our podcast, however we did not want to distract from Black voices speaking about these issues or muddle anything with our perspective on these issues before everyone clearly heard from those leading this incredible movement. On this issue we choose to listen before we offer our perspective. So we are waiting to talk about these protests until we have listened more carefully and processed the insight and perspectives of Black voices leading this incredible moment in history. We hope to have an episode up soon, but won’t post until we feel we have truly taken the time to understand first.

So we chose to air the great episode we had scheduled to be released this week despite the fact that it is not talking about the incredibly important issues burning up our streets.

This week we talk about community in the time of Covid. We have three incredible contributions from musicians talking about this moment and helping us get some perspective on what punk community is and what we should be reflecting on during the quarantine. The punk community is so reliant on being able to congregate in a physical space together, since we so often don’t live in a single area and it is hard to maintain any perspective when we can’t be with our community, as we are essentially cut off from each other during this quarantine. So we distill what it means to maintain a healthy underground perspective when we are being bombarded by the mainstream and cut off from our community and friends.

With contributions from Paul Rivera of the La Armada, Danielle Kolker and Jesse Sternberg of Out if System Transfer, and Glenn Gentzke of Treads and InRod. Plus we listen to tunes from all these incredible bands AND Power Alone.

The Ledge #429: More Minneapolis

After last week’s Minneapolis edition of my favorite songs of all time I was contacted by a ton of listeners with their own favorites of the great city. With that sort of response I coudn’t help but doing a sequel consisting of nothing but their favorites.

And it was a great decisions, as Ledge listeners are the best listeners. The result is a show much more varied than the one I put together last week. It begins with the great 60’s classic, “Action Woman” by The Litter, and meanders through all sorts of great artists from the last 40 years. The last few tracks showcase how the city continues to provide fabulous and varied music.

This show goes out to everybody in Minneapolis. Our thoughts are with you in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
